VLC is one of the most popular media player which allows to play most Audio Video files without worrying about file format. While Apples hates VLC to stay in Appstore, the Android version of the player were published earlier this month as VLC Player Beta (NEON version). Now the team just updated its VLC Beta player which brings better integration with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and 4.1 Jelly Bean. There is also a lot of bug fixed which improved performance. The Update also now allows users to move VLC Media Player Android App to SD card.

VLC for Android has been introduced couple of months ago as a beta app. After their announcement on Twitter the developer team have been working really hard for the past weeks and now we finally have a stable enough version to test. VLC media player can manage you video files, music and stream content from the web assuming you can provide links. The first version available on the Play Store works only with ARM v7 CPU‘s with integrated NEON extensions. That means that a minimum Cortex A8 CPU should work but not any as the Tegra 2 for example does not support NEON extensions. No need to worry though, ARM v6 and Tegra 2 support is coming in a few weeks/days.
The UI of VLC Player Android version is pretty basic, you won’t have problems getting around but don’t get used to it. The developers have already announced a huge UI change coming soon. Specific problems I encountered, given the Beta status, are not that bothersome. First, VLC didn’t manage to playback HD content using Hardware Acceleration, available in settings, but managed to do it very well once I deactivated the option. Second thing I found a little tiresome is that the app needed a lot of time to scan and add my music files to the library. These could be device specific but I expect future versions to correct most of the issues for all. For the moment VLC can be characterized as a promising solution to media management though it requires lots of work to reach the top.
